U!-BU?

Alfred Jarry created King Ubu at the end of the 19th century, yet the world of unbridled lust for power, hypocrisy and voluntary servitude he exposed remains painfully relevant today. Teatro Matita presents an explosive puppet-musical Dadaist cabaret rather than a conventional adaptation. The grotesque Ubu embodies power without restraint, responsibility or shame.

Combining marionette traditions, object theatre, live music and a grotesque “merde-operetta”, everyday items, mimic puppets and musical instruments build a distorted world where power becomes a game and the game reveals the mechanisms of reality. Ubu is both ridiculous and terrifying — primitive, greedy and obsessed with control. However, the performance exposes not only the ruthlessness of rulers, but also society’s willingness to obey. U!-BU? is a loud, provocative and visually playful political farce that echoes long after leaving the theatre.
